چکیده
This Special Issue presents the outcomes from 23rd African Association of Insect Scientists' Conference held in Cote D’Ivoire, connection with similar initiatives within and outside Africa. Over 65 scientific papers several countries, worldwide, were submitted, which about 40 accepted published. The issue focused on new advances value chain edible insects Africa beyond. An innovative light-emitting diode technology for mass harvesting grasshopper has been developed. nutrient composition such as desert locust evaluated. Organic waste streams have found to affect insect productivity nutritional value. Insect-based feed increases quality poultry meat. Conventional processing methods reduce microbiological hazards insects. Bioaccumulation heavy metals, excessive microbial loads pesticides residues threaten safety some insects, if control measures are not Climate change will impede availability insects; hence, necessitating upscaling production technologies sound conservation practices. Safety hygiene, other hand, hamper acceptability food and/or feed, particularly developed countries. Food fortification isolation bioactive compounds them highlights Issue, previously under-explored application modern development products medicinal or commercial derivable their therapeutic functions excellent opportunities expanding sector. Since disgust factors exist, sensitisation benefits consuming insect-based is a must. We believe that frontiers food, uses presented this special undoubtedly stimulate more debates collaborations sector

The largest portion of a product’s environmental impacts and costs of manufacturing and use results from decisions taken in the conceptual design phase long before its market entry. To foster sustainable production patterns, applying life cycle assessment in the early product development stage is gaining importance. Following recent scientific studies on using dipteran fly species for waste man...

There is an urgent need to increase the supply of sustainable protein for use in animal feed and the use of insect protein provides a potential alternative to protein crops and fishmeal. For example, fly larvae are highly compatible with use in animal feed containing much digestible protein with levels of key amino acids that are comparable with those found in high value alternatives such as so...

FAO has considered insects as food since 2003 [1] and is promoting consumption of insects (entomophagy) in the Western world because of the possibilities for sustainable production it offers. Insects as food are considered to leave smaller ecological footprints than conventional livestock (beef, pigs, and poultry) regarding feed, land and water needs, as well as greenhouse gas and ammonia emiss...
